Carla supports gay marriage

The former first lady spoke out in a Vogue interview, also speaking of her ‘bourgeois’ stay-at-home lifestyle

CARLA Bruni-Sakozy has spoken out in support of gay marriage and adoption in an interview with Parisian Vogue.

The former First Lady said it is one of the main topics on which she disagrees with the ex-president, who she said tends to “see people in groups of thousands rather than as groups of people we know”.

She added: “I have a lot of friends – women and men – who are in this situation and I don’t see anything unstable or perverse about families with homosexual parents.” In fact gay parents “might perhaps make a bigger commitment because of the fact that society is judging them”, she said.

Nicolas Sarkozy spoke out against gay marriage before this year’s presidential elections, saying he opposed it because it would lead to adoption rights. He said he knew there were examples where it worked, but he did not want to officialise a new definition of the family.

The issue is a current hot topic, with many on the right, especially Catholics, protesting against plans for a law allowing it.

Ms Bruni-Sarkozy is also quoted in the interview as saying women of her generation “don’t need to be a feminist”. “There were pioneers who opened the breach,” she told Vogue. “I’m not at all an active feminist. On the contrary I’m bourgeois, I love family life, I love doing the same thing every day.”

She refused to comment on political scandals which have hit her husband since he left power, such as the Bettencourt affair, saying she wanted to “go back to being an ordinary citizen like everyone else”.

“I no longer feel the desire nor the obligation to answer questions about a world that has enriched me humanly, which opened my eyes and mind, but at the end of the day is not mine.”
