Four departments on storm alert

Météo France has imposed an orange-level storm warning on four departments in the south-west

FEROCIOUS storms are expected to hit the south-west today, with Météo France imposing an orange-level storm warning on four departments

It forecasts storms will hit Gard and Aveyron followed by Aude and Hérault later today, with particularly heavy rains in Languedoc and eastern Aveyron, followed by violent storms.

Forecasters say they expect up to 25cm of rain in Hérault.

All four departments on orange alert have been warned they face heavy rains and the risk of flooding with the severe storms expected to continue through the night.

Residents face power cuts and are advised not to use phones and electrical appliances during thunderstorms.

They should take particular care on the roads or if working outside and should stay clear of wooded areas. The warning advises people not to try to cross flooded paths or roads, especially if near a waterway.
