Why was I billed for TV licence?
Connexion edition: June 2010

WE HAVE had a holiday home in Brittany for 20 years but only recently bought a television. The licence fee has been paid via local taxes but as I am 80, do I have to pay? R.F.

There is an exoneration on this TV licence fee (La redevance audiovisuelle payable along with the taxe d’habitation) for people over 60 whose incomes are below a certain threshold.

If your income declared last year was below €9,837 for single people or €15,091 for couples you qualify. However this only applies to main homes in France.

Anyone with a home in UK with a second home in France with a TV in it has to pay the redevance.
