Medicals before marriage were abolished in January 2008. The MP proposing it said it would save €14 million a year in reimbursements.

The test, dating from 1942, checked the couple’s health and the doctor advised about pregnancy and contraception.

It was argued that many children are born outside marriage or to pacsed couples and such advice is in any case now easily accessible.
