Bank warns of scam emails

Société Générale customers being targeted over internet and with phone calls in bid to steal confidential details

BANK Société Générale has warned that criminals are sending fake emails and making phone calls to customers and non-customers in a bid to get bank details.

The scam emails – called phishing – ask people to supply online details including confidential data, send urgent direct debits on a personal purchase and make other financial requests.

Société Générale says that the calls and emails are all false and intended to defraud customers.

It says “We remind customers that we will never, in an email or telephone call, ask you to reveal personal information nor ask you to send files or contact details. We ask customers not to respond to such emails and calls, not to click on any links and never to give any confidential information by telephone.

“Any such request for information will be part of an attempt at fraud which you should alert the bank to immediately.”

It says customers who receive such emails should forward them to securite@societegenerale.fr

Anyone who has clicked on a link in such an email should go into their online banking account using a new browser window and change their passwords.

Customers who want more information should contact their banking adviser or call the helpline on 0825 089 090 during opening hours.

The warning of the new scam comes in the wake of many others involving companies such as EDF, GDF-Suez, Microsoft.
