EDF-GDF staff on strike over perks

Workers call 24-hour walk-out over threat to their preferential tariffs which see them pay 5-10% of normal bills

EDF and GDF staff have called a one-day strike in response to moves to take away their preferential energy tariffs.

Over 300,000 people benefit from the tariffs, which see workers pay between 5-10% of a normal energy bill.

Five unions have called on members to strike and it is not known currently how many staff are taking part.

GDF worker and union member Laurent Langlard said that although the tariffs gave significant savings, they were taxed as income, and were effectively a complementary salary.

"It is out of the question that they can take away this advantage," said Mr Langlard. "The last time they tried in 1983, we had 96% strike participation."

EDF was unable to comment on the risk of power cuts at the time of publication.
