SIXTEEN migrants tried to make their way to the UK illegally by hiding in a lorry carrying Christmas trees from Dieppe to Newhaven, French police have said.

Customs officials found the 16 Albanian nationals hiding in a truckload of trees waiting to board a ferry at the port on Friday evening.

The two Polish drivers of the truck were taken into custody and were due to appear in court today.

The migrants, except for two minors, were taken to a regional detention centre.
