No need for UK coffee chains here

Connexion reader Stephen Foxall explains how there's no need for UK coffee chains in France.

I AM writing in response to the news that Costa Coffee is opening in France.

We live in France and very much enjoy a strong espresso almost everywhere we go, whether it be in a bar, restaurant, or at home.

It is always very hot, sensibly strong and the little cup is 2/3 to 3/3 full.

At certain times of the day there is often a little chocolate, nut or biscuit.

The cost is between €1 to €1.60 in our part of France (Brittany) and bar owners tell us they get a good return on these figures. Wonderful.

When we go back to the UK the coffee in the “chains” barely covers the bottom of the cup, is too strong, unreasonably expensive, usually at least cool by the time it gets to the table, and without fail we are requested to have a double.

Unless they change their ways I would suggest that the British ‘chains’ stay in the UK.

France has already got its coffee sussed.
