Sarkozy has €2.7 million

The president-candidate has had to make public his personal financial affairs as part of the presidential election rules

NICOLAS Sarkozy has wealth of €2.7 million, mainly invested in assurance vie policies – revealed in a declaration he has had to make at the end of his five years as president.

All of the presidential candidates have to make wealth declarations to the Conseil Constitutionnel, but only the president has his made public. If another candidate becomes president at the elections, however, his or her wealth will also be published.

Mr Sarkozy’s declaration shows he got 30% richer between 2007 and 2012.

He owns collections of watches, autographs and statuettes worth about €100,000 and has a joint current account with €57,000 in it. He also pays a monthly allowance to his ex-wife of €3,000 to support his teenage son Louis, as well as €2,926 a month in alimony to his first wife Marie-Dominique Culioli.

Front de Gauche candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon criticised the wealth declaration rule in La Croix saying: “There’s no reason for this information to be made public, or otherwise why not just publish everyone’s tax declarations. We shouldn’t be so neurotic about transparency.”
