Snow and flood alerts in place

Four departments in the south-east are at risk of bad conditions from snow and ice, while the Var is at risk of floods

WEATHER experts are today warning of risks of flooding in the Var and of snow and black ice in certain other areas of the south-east.

Several roads in the Var are today cut off due to flooding and there is an orange alert (“dangerous” conditions) for flooding in the Argens river, which is said to have risen “significantly”.

The Argens flooded badly in the 2010 Var floods, in which 26 people died.

In the flood risk area you should be very careful and should never try to drive through floods, says Météo France.

Orange alerts for snow and black ice are in place today in the Drôme, Isère, Loire and Haute-Loire. In these areas people should be very careful, especially when driving and it is preferable to only make essential journeys.

You should also carry basic supplies in the case of being stuck in your car for prolonged periods.
Météo France says there will be “abundant falls of ‘sticky’ snow” in mountain areas today.

The whole of the south-east half of France elsewhere is marked as yellow – “be careful” - while weather is expected to be mild in the north and west.
