'Super-region' vote in Alsace

Two department councils could merge with regional council, creating a new body that could be template for others

ALSACE residents will vote this weekend on whether to merge two departmental councils, creating a single administrative entity for the region.

The reform, championed by Alsace regional president Philippe Richert, is being put to a referendum.

If approved, it would see the Haut-Rhin and Bas-Rhin department councils combine with the regional council.

It has the support from UMP politicians as well as some Socialists and green party members keen to see a stronger regional body.

The result will be closely watched in other parts of France, as it could pave the way for more restructuring of department and regional councils.

The Front National is urging residents to vote no - believing regions should not be given more power, which should remain centralised in Paris.
