Airports need to make profit

Are there too many airports in France? (February). That depends what the airport is there for. If it is considered to be an essential public service and thus warrants support by the state for the public good, then no.

But if it is expected to be a stand-alone enterprise and make a profit, then probably the vast majority of airports in France should close.

It is my understanding that my local airport in Aurillac, and the flights operating out of it, have never turned a profit and it has survived only through state subsidies.

Does France really need, and should it continue to subsidise at taxpayers’ expense, unprofitable local air links for the benefit of the very few that use them?
