Make Britain great ...but inside Europe

I agree with Michael Moat (This is not democracy, Letters, January 2017). If the referendum had been decided by the younger generation alone, Brexit would not have happened. But the vote has been decided mostly by the older generation who will not bear the consequences.

The vote, based on the hope of ‘making Britain great again’ is the wish and a dream of a generation to turn the clocks back to the days of an Empire that no longer exists, an attempt doomed to failure.

Certainly, there are many bureaucrats in Brussels and some laws which could be questioned, but the EU has been created not only for economic reasons: it’s a reaction to the aftermath of two world wars – did the British forget this? Europe needs to stand together to confront Russia and – maybe – now also the US.

Britain has such a long history of immigration, mainly down to former colonies, for which only the “Great Empire” can be blamed, but without immigrants the country would be in a bad state.

We are entering critical times as we forget to think for ourselves and follow the fiddlers playing dangerous tunes.
Hopes will be destroyed after what looks likely to be a ‘hard Brexit’. People will be disappointed, but it will be these same people who voted for Brexit who will bear the greatest share of the consequences.

Britain might be an island, but it is still part of Europe, just look on the map!

It is humanity being sacrificed for nationalism. Open your eyes and make “Europe great again!”
