Volunteers sought to help out at top cycling race

Cycling race will commence in Nîmes and organisers are looking for volunteer stewards

Spain’s most prestigious cycling race, La Vuelta, will begin in France for the first time this summer – and there is a unique way for cycling enthusiasts to enjoy the race.

The 13.8km opening stage on August 19 will see riders battle it out on a time trial departing from the Roman arena in Nîmes, Gard, and organisers are inviting volunteers to man the crowd barriers along the route.

It provides a great chance to get close to the riders and take in the atmosphere – as well as meeting other cycling fans as 300 volunteers are needed.

To apply to become a volunteer steward, visit the Nîmes mairie website here, then scroll down to the section “Devenez bénévole pour la Vuelta” (Become a volunteer for La Vuelta) to download the registration form “le formulaire d’inscription”.

This 72nd edition sees La Vuelta leave Spanish soil for only the third time in its history – in 1997 it visited Lisbon and in 2009 riders headed to Assen in Holland.

Following the stage in Nîmes, the cyclists will head for Gruissan on the coast north of Perpignan before heading over the border to Spain. The race will finish on September 10 in Madrid.

This year’s Tour de France will start on July 1 in Dusseldorf in Germany and after calling in to Belgium and Luxemburg will end 3,521km later on the Champs-Elysées in Paris on July 23.
