Historic tower threatened

It originally belonged to a 13th century lighthouse

The emblematic belltower of Collioure, one of the last villages before the French/Spanish border in the Pyrénées-Orientales, is in danger of collapse and in urgent need of funds, say locals.

The belltower, which was converted from a 13th century lighthouse to become part of a 17th century church, has become fragile due to damage from the sea.

Mayor Jacques Manya says so far only a few thousand euros has been raised out of around a million which are needed to save it.

Donations (eligible for French tax deductions) can be sent to Association Internationale du Clocher de Collioure, 1 ave Aristide Maillol, 66190 Collioure.
