Monpellier airport is currently closed until further notice after a cargo plane was blown off the runway while attempting to land in the early hours of Saturday morning (September 24).

The Boeing 737 aéropostale was attempting to land in stormy conditions and ended up off the runway in a nearby lake. The three people on board were unharmed. An investigation is underway into the reasons for the crash.

“As a safety measure, Montpellier airport is closed for an indefinite period to cargo and commercial flights, pending the intervention of a specialised company to remove the aircraft,” the Préfet de l'Hérault wrote in a statement.

Several flights due to depart from the airport this morning have already been cancelled, including those heading for Athens at 06:00 and Tunis at 06:45. Flights to London-Gatwick and Paris-Orly that are scheduled this morning are also cancelled.

If you are due to fly from or to Montpellier today, please check the airport website for announcements or follow the updates on its Twitter page.
