Nearly two-thirds of France is on alert for a stormy start to the week.

The whole southern half of the country and the north-east corner have been issued with warnings for Monday (May 22) and Tuesday (May 23).

It is a yellow alert - the third-highest one - which means those affected should remain vigilant and keep up to date with weather developments.

Except for a pause on Tuesday morning, the warnings are in force for at least 36 hours, from midday on Monday until the early hours of Wednesday (May 24).

La Chaine Meteo says the country’s weather is being influenced by an area of high pressure over the British Isles, which is bringing sunny and dry conditions to the northern half of France.

But countering that is a low-pressure system moving up from Algeria towards France and Italy that is seeing unstable weather in the south.

It says Monday will see unstable weather and the threat of stormy weather over up to three-quarters of the country.

The risk of stormy showers is expected to persist on Tuesday across the southern half of France.

But regions north of the Loire will come under more influence from the area of high pressure over Britain. This is expected to mean the return of sunny spells after a cloudy start to the day.

Météo France, France’s official weather service, is predicting unstable and stormy weather will continue, particularly in the south-east, through to the end of the week. In the north, sunny conditions are expected to remain into the weekend, with highs of 24C on Saturday (May 27).
