Car test for drink-drivers

FRANCE is testing a ‘conditional’ driving licence for banned drink-drivers which would allow them to drive a vehicle fitted with a breathalyser linked to the starter.

The test is being done in Drôme, Marne and Nord and is aimed at stopping habitual drink drivers driving under the influence again, but also to help them recover from the addiction.
It is thought one in five banned drivers ignores the ban, mostly to keep their jobs. Until now only drivers in the most serious category could use a breath-test fitted vehicle – with alcohol above 0.8g/litre. The car will only start below 0.25mg/l.
