Scattering ashes is easy

PEOPLE who wish to be cremated and have ashes scattered in nature or at sea can organise for this with a letter to the mayors of the birthplace and site of the scattering.

Ashes cannot be scattered where they may spill on to public land or path and any rural site should be pinpointed to the mayor.

There are few formalities for the dispersion des cendres at sea, but direct scattering must be done 300m or more from the coast. If a funeral urn is to be submerged it must be at least 6km from the coast and away from fishing grounds and use a biodegradable urn.

Boat hire companies can help organise access at sea, as can the Sauveteurs en mer (SNSM) lifeboat organisation.
