The change will only affect a minority of taxpayers but will be important for those concerned because:
- The numéro fiscal is necessary for certain formalities, but also to sign in to your personal space on the tax website, impots.gouv.fr
- Without the correct, up-to-date one you will be unable to sign in, for example to make a declaration online of 2017 income
- For those concerned, their old documents in their personal space such as past tax declarations and avis d’imposition will no longer be accessible
This comes as Connexion is compiling our latest, 2018, helpguide to French income tax declarations, which includes information on making declarations online.
According to the Finance Ministry the measure, affecting some 50,000 households is due to the fact they have discovered some problems with people’s existing numbers while doing checks in preparation for the ‘at source’ tax systems that are due to come in next year for many kinds of French-sourced income.
The officials aim to send new numbers out before online declarations open in mid-April, however in the meantime people’s personal spaces will be inaccessible after the end of March.
If you are concerned you should have had notification of this by now, in which case it is a good idea to download and save onto your computer anything out of your old personal space that you may want to consult in future.
After the change, if you need to access any ‘lost’ information, you will have to ask your tax office to retrieve it.
