Telecoms: still time to act

Telecom firms raised tariffs over summer without giving customers much warning – but clients can still act.

The French consumer code gives four months to cancel contracts if costs change; but after that time users are deemed to have accepted the rise. You should check your bills and emails for the change date. SFR raised fees by €2-€5 for landline and mobile clients, including low-cost Red users, Orange Dé­cou­verte internet deal rose from €21 to €24.99, while Bouygues started charging €3 to rent its Bbox Miami.

Consumer protection agency officers from the DGCCRF warned the firms that they face fraud prosecution if they do not include box rental costs in the overall contract price.

Some operators must now rethink their tariffs to comply.
