EasyJet starts new cabin bag rules

Only smaller luggage is guaranteed to go on aircraft and some passengers may be forced to put hand luggage in hold

STARTING today, easyJet is bringing in new rules on hand luggage and will only guarantee cabin space for bags that are 50cm x 40cm x 20cm – roughly 37% smaller than the previous limit.

Passengers will still be allowed to take the older size cabin baggage – which are 56cm x 45cm x 25cm – but cabin crew may say they must go into the hold, for no extra charge, if space is running out on-board. Passengers would have to wait until hold luggage was unloaded to pick them up again.

EasyJet says the move is not to get more money out of customers but because aircraft do not have enough room for every passenger to carry on board luggage at the old measurements.

Switching to the new sizes – roughly 5cm smaller all round – will mean there is enough space for every passenger to carry luggage onboard with them.
