New tax on TVs and fridges

The government plans a tax on appliances, to be used to help low income families buy energy-efficient ones

A SURCHARGE scheme on household appliances is planned for the start of next year.

It could affect televisions, washing machines, fridges, air conditioning units etc.

The more electricity an appliance consumes the more it will be taxed, at a rate of two centimes per kWh.

The money gained from the scheme will be used to give a €150 voucher to lower income households, eligible for the “social” tariffs of gas or electricity when they buy a fridge or freezer rated A++ or A+++ for efficiency.

Budget Minister Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet says the aim is to help preserve the environment and to show solidarity.

Ademe, the agency promoting green lifestyles, says around two million households could benefit.
