Lockdown in France and second homes

We look at what second-home owners can and cannot do under France’s new lockdown measures

France’s lockdown, due to last until at least December 1, is set to affect people with second homes in France.

We answer three of the most asked reader questions from second home owners.

I arrived at my second home before lockdown was announced. Can I stay?

Anyone who is currently at their second home in France can stay. You will have to follow all the local rules, as usual.

This includes, not leaving your home except for in certain situations, such as exercising or doing essential shopping.

Regional travel is also banned, so you cannot travel around the country.

I am currently in the UK but I have a second home in France. Can I go there during the lockdown?

During lockdown, foreigners do not have the right to come on holiday or visit a second home in France, an operator at France’s Covid-19 hotline told The Connexion

You should only come to France if you are a French national or are a resident and have a valid reason.

However, France’s borders with the European area (this includes the UK) will remain open, so whether a person would be stopped and checked while travelling is unclear. Officially, you should not travel.

I am currently at my second home, can I travel home to the UK?

You have the right to leave the country and return to your home. Transport services in France will be maintained, so it will be possible to travel to airports, train stations or ferry ports.

You will need to fill out an exemption form (attestation de déplacement) and check the box, “Déplacements pour motif familial impérieux, pour l'assistance aux personnes vulnérables et précaires ou la garde d'enfants”.

Beside it you should write something similar to: “Je retourne dans mon pays d'origine” (I am returning to my home country).

If you are stopped, you may also be asked to show your travel ticket.
