Savoury treat for chocolate lovers

Adventurous foodies will soon be able to try mushroom, onion, pepper and olive-flavour treats

CHOCOLATE lovers are in for something of a tasty surprise this year - the traditionally sweet treat is going savoury, courtesy of two renowned chocolatiers.

Nicolas Cloiseau, head chocolatier at the world-famous La Maison du Chocolat, has created four unusual flavours for a new range of chocolates which will go on sale in May.

The “Esprit salé” range will feature dark ganache chocolates with either red pepper or caramelised onions and fig, a praline with black olives and olive oil, and a hazelnut praline with cèpe mushroom.

Mr Cloiseau, a Meilleur Ouvrier de France, has a reputation as a pioneer of chocolate, and has worked at La Maison du Chocolat since 1996.

Jacques Genin, meanwhile, has created chocolates with tomato, pepper, beetroot, and turnip fillings which are being sold in his two Paris stores.
