Strasbourg shooting: Fourth victim dies

A fourth victim of the Strasbourg terror attacks has died of his wounds after the fatal Christmas market shooting on Wednesday December 12, which also injured 12 others and left one person in a coma.

Italian journalist Antonio Megalizzi, who was 28 years old, died of his injuries on Friday December 14, the Paris prosecutor confirmed.

Mr Megalizzi was originally from Trente, in the north-west of Italy, and was in Strasbourg for work, reporting on the European Parliament for network radio group Europhonica.

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, said: “Deep sadness at the death of Antonio Megalizzi, a young man with a huge passion for journalism, for radio, for European institutions. I send thoughts to his family and his girlfriend, which are shared by the entire government.”

Italian president of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, said: “I send a prayer with [Mr Megalizzi] on his journey to heaven. I will always remember [meeting him] at this dinner in Mezzocorona, where he told me all about his dreams as a young journalist.”

Italian minister for the Interior, Matteo Salvini, said: “A prayer for Antonio Megalizzi, that no-one else should have to die like this.”

Two people died soon after the terrorist incident in Strasbourg, which took place the night of Wednesday December 12 as French-born, radicalised delinquent Chérif Chekatt opened fire.

A third victim died on Thursday, while a fifth person is still in a “brain dead” vegetative state.

Chekatt was killed by police two days after the attack.
