US first lady swaps president’s gender

Melania Trump got into difficulties with French spelling

US First Lady Melania Trump mistakenly gave President Macron a feminine gender following the presidential couple's visit to France for 14 juillet – which she swiftly corrected after commenters pointed it out.

Mrs Trump, who goes by the Twitter name of FLOTUS (First Lady Of The United States), tweeted: “Thank you @EmanuelleMacron & people of Paris for your kind hospitality - @potus & I enjoyed our visit.”

The president’s name is of course Emmanuel Macron, and not Emanuelle (or as it is usually spelled, Emmanuelle) – the problem was, however compounded by the fact that someone had created a spoof twitter account for EmanuelleMacron, which promptly replied “you are most welcome @FLOTUS!” with a smiley with its tongue sticking out.

The message was quickly replaced by one with the spelling adjusted, tagging in the correct recipient…

The name Emmanuelle is usually pronounced with subtly more stress on the ending than the masculine form and well-known Emmanuelles include the actress Emmanuelle Béart, and the heroine of a series of erotic firms.
