Can you take your own identity photos?

I read that you can now take your own identity photos with your smartphone for official documents – is this really acceptable in France and can you send them in digital format? S.T.

There is a mobile application which offers to help you take your own identity photos on your mobile phone for official purposes (French driving licences, passports, ID cards, cartes de séjour…), but it is not officially endorsed by the government. It is called Smartphone iD (see www.identite.photos).
