Children get first holiday in Paris
Paris tourist sites open their doors today to tens of thousands of children who would not otherwise get a holiday
NEARLY 40,000 children who do not get away on holiday have arrived in Paris from all over France and Europe for a special day of activities.
A large picnic has been organised on the Champ-de-Mars at the base of the Eiffel Tower for the youngsters as part of the Soleils d’Europe festival organised by the Secours Populaire Français charity.
They will be able to visit 25 of the top tourist and sports sites for free including Versailles, Fontainebleau, the Louvre, Paris Plages, the air and space museum and the national stadium, Stade de France.
SPF has been running the Journée des Oubliés des Vacances events for the “forgotten” youngsters for 30 years as one child in three does not get to go on holiday.
The organisation for the event is massive: 350 buses to transport the youngsters to the 25 sites, 400 street artists to entertain them at the picnic and hundreds of volunteers to accompany the children from their homes to Paris.
