Teachers to strike on September 27

Nationwide strike action confirmed as education unions protest against job cuts

TEACHERS' unions have announced plans for a nationwide one-day strike after the summer holidays, on September 27, to protest against job cuts.

They are calling on the government to stop its policy of only replacing half of workers who retire.

Some 16,000 teaching jobs are due to be scrapped in September - about 9,000 of which will be in primary schools.

About 1,500 primary classes will close after the summer break, prompting growing numbers of local protests by teachers and parents' associations.
