Last supermoon of 2020 visible from France

It will start at 12:45 French time today (Thursday May 7) as the moon will already be full, and when the sun goes down around 21:30, the moon will be 362,800km away from the Earth.

This full moon is called flower moon and is considered a “supermoon” because it will be in its full phase and at its perigee, meaning at the closest point to the Earth, at the same time.

The expression flower moon comes from Amerindian culture. The May moon is associated with the growth of flowers.

Contrary to a classic full moon, the supermoon is around 14% bigger and 30% brighter but the difference can be hard to spot to human eye and is best appreciated via a telescope.

The next supermoon will be on April 27, 2021.
