The French people have backed Emmanuel Macron (La République En Marche) and Marine Le Pen (Rassemblement National) in the first round of the presidential election, meaning the two will face each other in the second round on April 24.
The 10 candidates who did not make the cut are left with the option of selecting one of their rivals for this round.
We look at what they have said, from “blocking the extreme right”, to dismissing both remaining candidates, to keeping it a secret.
Jean-Luc Mélenchon (La France Insoumise): Not Le Pen
“Do not give a single vote to Madame Le Pen! Do not give a single vote to Madame Le Pen! Do not give a single vote to Madame Le Pen.”
Éric Zemmour (Reconquête): Vote Le Pen
“I am determined to continue the fight and I will not choose the wrong opponent. That is why I am calling for a vote for Marine Le Pen. There is something much bigger than us: France.”
Valérie Pécresse (Les Républicains): Vote for Macron to stop Le Pen
"Marine Le Pen's project will lead to discord and bankruptcy. Her historical proximity to Vladimir Putin discredits her. So, despite the differences I mentioned during the campaign, I will vote in conscience for Emmanuel Macron, to prevent Marine Le Pen from coming to power and the chaos that would result from it."
Yannick Jadot (Europe Écologie Les Verts - Greens): Stop extreme right
"I call on my voters to stop the extreme right by putting a Macron ballot in the ballot box on April 24l."
Nicolas Dupont-Aignan (Debout la France): Not Macron
“I call on the French people to do everything to stop Macron. This is why I will vote for Marine Le Pen.”
Anne Hidalgo (Parti socialiste): Against the extreme right of Marine Le Pen
“So that France does not fall into the hatred of all against all, I call on you with gravity to vote on April 24 against the extreme right of Marine Le Pen by giving your vote to Emmanuel Macron.”
Fabien Roussel (Parti communiste de France): Not Le Pen
“I will never allow Madame Le Pen to come to power. We will never trivialise the extreme right and its ideas.
“I call on all French people to use the only ballot paper at our disposal to beat her in the second round.”
Philippe Poutou (Nouveau Parti anticapitaliste): Neither
“Our advice is ‘not one vote should go to the extreme right’. However, we will not suggest voting in favour of Macron either because he is a pyromaniac firefighter whose policies are one of the causes of the rise of the far right.”
Nathalie Arthaud (Lutte Ouvrière): Neither
“If Marine Le Pen comes to power, she will rule in the interests of the richest, but in an even more reactionary and authoritarian way. Opposite her is Macron, his open contempt for workers and the poor, his disdain for anything that does not come from above."
Jean Lassalle (Résistons): Keeping it secret
