A digital start-up hopes to bring farm food closer to home.
The Montpellier-based Pig's Daddy, which will launch in May if it can secure the necessary funding, will allow lovers of ethically farmed pigs to order meat from the individual animal of their choice before it is slaughtered.
"Consumers are fed up with the way animals are treated in intensive livestock farming," said the duo behind the scheme, Clément Thollot and Fabien Frery. "People want ethics, quality … But not everyone [can] live next door to a pig farm."
The animals advertised on the site will all be organically reared, and will live mostly outdoors in good conditions. Three to four months before they reach their final weight, the animal will be given an online ID, which will reveal its breed, as well as the name and location of the farm.
From then, buyers will be able to order portions of meat from the animal, with a progress bar indicating how much of the animal is still available. The ordered meat will be delivered in France by refrigerated lorry within 48 hours of slaughter.
The price for the meat will be set by the farmer, which can be changed based on how well the sale of the pig is progressing.
