Seven French films you can watch this month with subtitles

May will see the Cannes Film Festival take place, so what better time to dip into French cinema?

Cinema retains a key place in France’s culture and there are plenty of great French movies to sink your teeth into across all genres. 

For learners, the best way to watch the films is in French with French subtitles. 

Fortunately, on most streaming platforms, there is an option to add subtitles, and, on some, you can even choose which language you want them in. 

The same goes for the audio on Netflix, meaning you can often watch English films dubbed into French. 

Here are some French films you can watch with subtitles this month.

Five (Netflix) 

Five is a comedy-comedy released in 2016, starring some of France’s biggest actors of the moment including Pierre Niney and François Civil. 

It follows a young man who starts dealing drugs after going broke from buying a Parisian apartment with his friends. 

Premières vacances (Netflix) 

Premières vacances is a romantic comedy about a Tinder couple who put their relationship to the test.

Mission Pays basque (Netflix) 

A woman from Paris tries to transform a hardware store in the Basque Country into a supermarket, much to the anger of the local residents.

La Promesse de l’aube (Netflix) 

This biographic Franco-Belgian film is another one starring Pierre Niney and tells the story of Roman, who grows up to become a famous writer and war hero having been raised by his single Jewish mother. 

L’intervention: La naissance du GIGN (Netflix) 

Based on true events, this film details the story of a team of French snipers who face a very challenging mission when a school bus of children of French military officials is taken hostage in Djibouti in 1976.  

Dikkenek (Amazon Prime)

Dikkenek is a Belgian film which has had a cult following since its release in 2006. 

Dikkenek is a word originating from Brussels referring to someone who is a know-it-all. 

In this case, the know-it-all is the main character J.C., who likes to give lessons to everyone he meets.  

Une Belle Course (Amazon Prime) 

Released in 2022, Une Belle Course stars Line Renaud and Dany Boon as it follows 92-year-old Madeline’s taxi journey as she prepares to move into a retirement home.
