DEPARTMENTS:  Ain, Ardèche, Drôme, Isère, Loire, Rhône, Savoie and Haute-Savoie plus Lyon Métropole

MAIN CITIES: Grenoble, Saint-Etienne, Annemasse, Annecy, Chambéry, Valence, Vénissieux, Villeurbanne

Featuring some of the most beautiful scenery in France, the Rhône-Alpes region has Western Europe’s highest peak and its deepest cave and its ever-varied landscape brings visitors and holiday home owners all year round.

Whether they are keen on skiing, climbing, hiking or cycling on some of the mythical Tour de France cols, they also have access to a land of dozens of lakes and nine national parks plus the lavender fields of Drôme.

Alongside this, there is Lyon, the capital of gastronomy, and the wines of the northern Rhône valley such as Côte Rôtie, Saint Joseph or Crozes-Hermitage, plus Beaujolais to the north.

Bordering Switzerland and Italy to the east, Rhône-Alpes is also home to many transfrontaliers who live in France and work in Geneva, and this can push prices up.

Annecy is also popular with people looking forward to retirement and Grenoble was last year rated one of the top two towns to live in France.

Prices vary enormously across the region, from a low of €1,093/m² in Loire department to the heights, literally, of Haute-Savoie where the price per square metre can easily go above €8,000 in places like Megève and €7,000 in Chamonix.

In general, western areas are cheapest for property and prices in the mountains can quickly climb but the average house price across the region is €2,202/m², with €1,470/m² in Loire and €3,400/m² in Haute-Savoie.
