Which UK ferry ports are involved in EES / Etias procedures?

Checks are only carried out at French ports

I have had a second home in France for 30 years, coming back and forth via the port of Newhaven. Is this port affected by EES/Etias? I have not seen any new installations being put in place.

The only UK ferry port directly affected by EES is Dover.

This is because under rules set in the 2003 Le Touquet Treaty, French immigration controls are carried out on British soil at Dover as passengers embark for France, as opposed to on arrival in France.

This is also the case for Eurostar passengers boarding at St Pancras and Eurotunnel users at Folkestone.

Otherwise, EES checks are only carried out at French ports/ airports when non-EU/non-EEA/non-Swiss national passengers arrive from outside the Schengen area or leave heading to a non-Schengen state.

As for Etias, once it is in force, this permission will be linked to people’s passports and a lack of permission will be flagged if people who need it arrive without it; otherwise it will not involve specific procedures at the border.
