How many households are in each income-tax band?
Over 80% of French households fall into the first two bands (0% or 11%)
As explained, France uses a progressive income tax band system.
The highest band into which your assessable income falls after it is divided by the number of family quotient parts, is called your taux marginal (marginal tax rate).
According to 2025 statistics from central tax authorities DGFiP, households are distributed as follows:
32.9% (13.5 million households) – 0% band
50.4% (20.7 million) – 11% band
15.6% (6.4 million) – 30% band
1% (421,000) – 41% band
0.1% (61,000) – 45% band
This means over 80% of French households fall into the first two bands (0% or 11%).
How to know which band you are in
Your tax band corresponds to your taux marginal d’imposition (TMI), which appears at the end of your avis d’imposition.
This should not be confused with the taux moyen (average tax rate), which is how much tax you pay on your income overall, which is invariably lower than the taux marginal.
Average income-tax paid in each band
The tax authority also published average income-tax amounts paid by households in each band:
0% band: average –€56 (negative due to tax credits received)
11% band: average €557
30% band: average €6,915
41% band: average €39,299
45% band: average €189,082
Comparing your own income tax bill with these averages can give a rough idea of whether you pay more or less than other households in the same band.
