France's concrete road barriers are safer than metal ones

Concrete barriers are thought to be more durable in the event of an impact

Concrete ‘Jersey’ barriers can stop HGVs from crossing the central reservation

To the Editor,

I cannot understand why your online article about concrete road barriers replacing metal ones equivocates on the pros and cons.

The metal barriers are next to useless as HGVs just go straight through them, causing fatal head-on collisions.

The concrete ‘Jersey’ barriers stop HGVs from crossing the central reservation.

Therefore, throughout France and the UK, and no doubt elsewhere, highway authorities have been replacing metal central reservation barriers with concrete wherever possible for the last five or 10 years.

The programmes are prioritised for the most risky locations first, due to budget constraints. It may be another 10 years before it is all complete.
