Helmets are not the answer to bad habits on French ski slopes

A reader expresses their thoughts on the debate

No national requirement in France for adults to wear helmets, though ski schools generally insist on them for children

To the Editor,

Having been avid skiers for more than 35 years in numerous countries, and now saisonniers in France, both my wife and I feel qualified to offer an experienced and balanced view on the recent debate about whether ski helmets should be obligatory.

We are very aware of the perceived risks but prefer the benefits of not wearing a helmet. We feel more aware of our surroundings and have all our senses at their full capability.

We ski within our ability and adjust to the conditions. Why force those who are responsible and choose not to wear a helmet to feel ‘less safe’?

Statistics can be manipulated in many ways to the advantage of those who wish to demonstrate the validity of a particular position.

An increase in serious incidents cannot be taken with only helmets in consideration; there are numerous other factors at play.

Advances in equipment technology have enabled skiers of all abilities to progress with limited formal tuition.

This has resulted in a generation of skiers who lack the skills and sadly the slope protocols taught when progressing through ski school.

It is also very apparent that wearing helmets has led to an air of invincibility among those whose speed and behaviour does not match their ability or control.

Since the pandemic, cost-cutting by many resorts has seen fewer patrols taking place.

When they do, these tend to focus on marker poles or piste markers and rarely tackle poor ski behaviour.

More education and management of unruly skiers is needed rather than mandating a solution that is not even as good as a sticking plaster, distorts true statistics and removes freedom of choice for responsible skiers.
