Applications for the government’s MaPrimeRénov grants reopened in October after a three-month pause over summer – but this state aid is not the only financial help available to property owners looking to renovate.
Local authorities also offer various grants, both at métropole level for conurbations as well as in rural prefectures.
The Agence nationale pour l'information sur le logement (ANIL) has a search facility on its website to show which grants are available in each department.
However, eligibility is not guaranteed.
In Charente, for example, grants for rural properties are available from the related Agence nationale de l'habitat, but only to owners below a certain declared income threshold. For 2025, this was set at €17,173 for a single household or €25,115 when there are two people living there.
To qualify, the property must also be 15 years old or more, a main residence, and the renovation work on it must improve thermal efficiency by at least 25%.
To ascertain the latter, you will first have to pay for an energy audit, which can cost over €1,000.
In addition the work must be carried out by a professional with reconnu garant de l'environnement (RGE) certification.
The grant will cover a maximum of 15% of the cost of the work, with a €3,000 limit.
In Charente, additional help is available for those who live in the Grand Angoulême conurbation.
The grants can be used in conjunction with other financial aid for energy renovation, for example zero-interest bank loans and the Certificat d'économies d'énergie (CEE) initiatve offered by some large companies.
Information is available from local associations or energy consultants listed on the ANIL website – in Charente there are two listed.
Grants in some metropolitan areas are more generous, and available to people with a higher declared income. An example is Lyon, where up to €18,650 is available for energy renovation work regardless of household revenue.
Other metropolitan areas with generous schemes include Rouen, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Strasbourg, Grenoble, Nice, Nancy and Orléans.
