Bernard breaks freestyle record

Olympic gold medallist and gendarme clocks 45.69 seconds in 100m event at French national championships.

OLYMPIC gold medallist Alain Bernard has set a new world record in the 100m freestyle short-course at the French national swimming championships in Angers.

Bernard, who picked up his gold at Beijing in the long-course freestyle event, knocked 0.14 seconds off the record of Swedish rival Stefan Nystrand with a time of 45.69 seconds.

Nystrand set the record in 2007 in Berlin.

Bernard, 25, from Antibes in the Alpes-Maritimes, won three medals at the Olympics – gold, silver and bronze.

Since the beginning of this year, Bernard has broken five world records.
