Historic rainfall in the Var yesterday has left several roads flooded or closed this morning.

Up to 130mm of rain fell in parts of the department on Monday (March 9), particularly around Le Pradet and Carqueiranne.

Several areas saw March rainfall records broken in a matter of hours.

This included in Hyères, where the previously daily record of 84.1mm had stood for nearly 40 years before more than 113mm fell on Monday.

The Gapeau river that runs through the department and near Hyères saw its levels rise rapidly, before receding overnight.

However, this led to several roads near the river being flooded.

The RD12 and RD70 were completely closed this morning due to flooding, as was the RD559A, with several other roads nearby partially flooded.

The affected roads are outlined in the social media post below.

Drivers in the area should keep up to date via official channels.

Despite the heavy rainfall, heightened weather alerts were not raised, nor are any in place today (March 10).

There have been no reports of serious injuries related to the rainfall, however at least a dozen rescue missions were carried out by pompiers in the department, including evacuating people from inside their vehicles and homes.

Photos and videos below show the extent of flooding in the department.
