A weekend of calm if mostly grey weather is forecast for France with rainfall limited to light showers or coastal areas.

Only the south-east will remain free from grey skies, with variable conditions in the south-west and north of the Loire across Saturday and Sunday.

Temperatures will continue to remain above average for the season but become progressively cooler as the weekend continues.

Friday December 12

Morning fog across several regions will disperse by midday, but drivers out early should stay cautious on the roads.

Grey skies will be limited to the north-west and north, largely along the English Channel and as far inland as Nantes and Paris.

Elsewhere, skies will become progressively sunnier towards the Mediterranean and should be completely clear along the coast.

Highs of around 9C in the east, 11C to 12C in the north, and 13C to 15C in the south are expected. In Nice, it may reach up to 17C.

Saturday December 13

Anticyclone winds across France are responsible for the calm weather but will also bring humid air and grey clouds.

These clouds will cover France diagonally from the south-west to the north-east, potentially bringing light showers to these areas.

Either side of this conditions should be sunnier, particularly in the south along the Mediterranean and mountain foothills.

In Brittany, sunny skies should appear once morning fog dissipates.

Temperatures will drop slightly from Friday, with highs of 10C - 11C in the north and 12C in the south-west, but remain at around 15C along the Mediterranean, again reaching up to 17C in Nice.

Sunday December 14

Sunday will see patterns shift slightly, as the block of grey clouds moves further north.

A classic north-south divide will form, with areas south of the Loire – including the south-west this time – sunny and mild, and greyer skies limited to northern areas.

Towards the English Channel, skies will become darker and persistent showers are expected.

A further drop in temperatures is forecast, with most areas in the north unlikely to see double-digit highs, and maximums of around 5C in the east.

In the south however, highs of around 13C in the south-west and 15C along the Mediterranean persist.

Early forecasts for next week see a period of prolonged rainfall beginning on Tuesday and covering much of France for several days.
