Weather conditions will start to improve across much of France this weekend as the Azores high-pressure system moves closer to the country bringing to an end the spell of unsettled weather.
While not fully stable, the weather will take on a more summery feel as sunshine and warmer temperatures return over July 25 to 27, particularly in the south-east, although cloudier spells and isolated showers are forecast in parts of the north-east and south-west on Sunday.
Friday July 25
The weekend begins with mixed conditions across the country. Skies will remain overcast in the north-east, with more frequent cloud cover near the Channel coast.
In the west, clearer spells will develop throughout the day. South-eastern areas will benefit from bright sunshine, but the mistral wind will blow strongly near the Mediterranean.
Afternoon temperatures will rise, reaching 21C along the Channel and up to 30C in the south-east. These are close to seasonal averages.
Saturday July 26
Saturday will mark a noticeable improvement in many regions. While eastern areas may still see a mix of clouds and sunshine, clearer skies will dominate further west.
The Mediterranean basin will again enjoy long sunny periods, however both the northerly mistral and north-westerly tramontane, which are associated with heightened wildfire risk, will continue to blow at moderate strength.
Temperatures will be close to normal for the time of year, ranging from around 20C in the north to 30C in the far south.
Sunday July 27
Cloud cover will spread across much of the country, particularly from the north down to the Pyrenees. These clouds may bring showers in parts of the northern Alps, Auvergne, and the central-east.
Mistral and tramontane winds will remain active near the Mediterranean, increasing the risk of wildfires.
Elsewhere, sunny intervals will alternate with cloudier periods, with a generally pleasant feel to the day. The north-east will be the exception with lingering showers and cooler air continuing.
Morning lows will range from 10C to 20C, with afternoon highs between 20C and 23C north of the Loire, and up to 30C further south. These values remain within normal seasonal ranges.
The final weekend of July will bring a north-south split in conditions - with sunshine and heat in the south-east, and fresher, more variable weather in the north-east.
