France is set for an unusually warm week, with temperatures reaching up to 30C in the south-west on Thursday (October 15), before cooler and wetter conditions return on Friday.

High pressure will keep most of the country dry, although low cloud and morning fog may persist in northern areas.

Temperatures are forecast to peak at 6C to 12C above seasonal averages in some locations, with conditions more typical of June than mid-October.

Monday, October 12

The week begins with contrasting conditions across France.

Cloudy skies and occasional light rain are forecast in the west, particularly towards the Atlantic coast, while morning fog and low cloud in the east should gradually clear to reveal sunshine.

The Mediterranean and Alpine regions will see the best of the weather, with dry and sunny conditions.

Tuesday, October 13

Cloud and light rain will persist across much of northern France, while the south will remain largely dry.

Morning mist and low cloud should gradually disperse between the Pyrenees and eastern France, with longer sunny spells around the Mediterranean and in the Alps.

Temperatures will continue to rise, reaching around 20C in the north and up to 23C in the south.

Wednesday, October 14

Conditions will improve across much of the country as high pressure strengthens.

Southern France will enjoy widespread sunshine, while thick morning cloud in northern areas should gradually break up during the afternoon.

A few light showers remain possible near the English Channel.

Temperatures will climb further, particularly in western and central France.

Thursday, October 15

Thursday is forecast to be the warmest and sunniest day of the week, with high pressure centred over France.

Afternoon temperatures will reach 24C to 26C across western and central regions, rising to 28C to 30C in the south-west, particularly inland areas of Landes and Béarn.

These temperatures will be considerably above seasonal averages, approaching levels normally associated with mid-June.

Most regions will see prolonged sunshine, although maritime cloud is expected to develop over Occitanie as southerly winds strengthen.

Friday, October 16

A change in wind direction will bring an end to the unusually warm conditions.

Northerly winds will push cooler air across the northern and western halves of France, accompanied by increasing cloud and showers.

Temperatures are expected to fall noticeably, particularly in areas that experienced Thursday's peak warmth.

Cloud will also increase across southern and eastern France, although conditions should remain less unsettled than in the north.

The cooler weather is forecast to continue into the weekend, bringing temperatures closer to seasonal averages.
