A week of calm but chilly weather is likely across France this week as October begins bringing a definitive autumn feel.
Most areas will be free of rain, with only the inland south-east, Pyrénées, German border area and Corsica expected to see light rainfall.
Monday September 29
Despite the lack of rain, a classic north-south divide remains on Monday, with cloudy skies above the Loire and clear skies in the south.
Temperatures will hover at around 17C - 20C in the north, and 20C - 23C in the south, potentially reaching up to 24C along the Mediterranean coast (27C in Corsica). This will be the warmest day of the week.
Chilly overnight temperatures look set to stay in central France, falling to around 6C in some places. Minus temperatures were recorded overnight during the weekend.
Tuesday September 30
Similar conditions are expected on Tuesday, although clouds will be more numerous in eastern and central areas, with clearer skies in Brittany and the Atlantic coast.
Fairly strong winds in the clouded areas will bring a slight chill to the air, even if temperatures remain similar to Monday.
In the south-west and parts of central France, morning fog is likely, however this will lift by mid-morning. No warnings are currently being issued to drivers over conditions.
Wednesday October 1
October begins in much the same way.
Temperatures will drop slightly in the east – close to a cold front in Central Europe – reaching only highs of 14C - 15C, but elsewhere highs of around 20C are possible.
Threatening grey clouds in the west should dissipate early in the morning without rain.
Showers are forecast in the southern Alps/inland Provence and Corsica but are not expected to bring significant downfall.
The Mistral and Tramontane winds in the south will pick up, but should not reach abnormally high levels.
Thursday October 2
The threat of showers will continue in the south-east but morning clouds in most other areas look set to disappear.
A slight drop in temperature – unlikely to reach above 18C in the north or 21C in the south – will follow despite clear skies.
Friday October 3
Disturbances from the Atlantic are set to bring thick clouds to the English Channel and possibly the western coast.
These clouds will eventually cover most of France and will be thick and grey in the north and wispier in the south.
While rain moving south from England may touch some of the Normandy coast, currently forecasters do not predict rainfall despite the potentially menacing nature of these clouds.
Temperatures will drop further, reaching only 12C near the German border and 16C in most of the north.
In the south, the Mediterranean coast and south-west will continue to see highs of 20C to 22C.
