Minnows beaten in cup final

One goal gives Lyon the Coupe de France as Normandy amateurs Quevilly go down battling

THIRD-DIVISION minnows Quevilly saw their Coupe de France dreams crumple as they went down 1-0 to Olympique Lyon at Stade de France.

Nearly 30,000 fans of the Normandy amateur football side were in the ground for the game and saw Lisandro Lopez grab the important Lyon goal in the 28th minute.

However, Quevilly hit back strongly in a bid to with their first final since 1927 but, despite seeing one shot tipped on to the crossbar, could not grab the equaliser.

Lyon captain Cris paid tribute to the efforts in allowing Quevilly captain Christophe Beaugrard to join him to pick up the trophy.

The Lyon victory eases some fears for other rivals in the top tier - as a Quevilly win would have allowed them to play in European football next year.

It could also have allowed them to challenge for Trophée des Champions, the French decider between the Ligue 1 champions and the Coupe de France winners

This year it is being played in New York and there were fears that Quevilly taking part would have hurt the spectacle.
