Storms, gales, snow: France’s official weather reports become more detailed

Only certain areas in departments may see warning levels change

Alerts will now more accurately pinpoint exact locations of disruption within departments

French state forecaster Météo France is refining its weather reports to provide more accurate forecasts based on local geography and precise information. 

This includes more localised information about four types of weather event: thunderstorms, snow/ice, wind, and rain/flash flooding.

This comes in addition to the localised alerts for avalanches and coastal flooding already available.

All of these conditions can see weather alerts raised using the forecaster’s colour-coded system.

New reports will be less focused on departmental-wide warnings and more on local events. 

It means that in some cases official weather alerts will only apply to certain areas of a department. Specific locations may therefore see warnings that are higher or lower than the rest of the department.

Storms and sunshine in a single department

The improvements are focused on departments such as Haute-Garonne, which can see dramatically different conditions between the Garonne valley (where the capital Toulouse and much of the department’s population is located) and the rural mountainous areas to the south. 

For example on September 1, the department was under a warning for thunderstorms, however Toulouse itself was sunny and dry throughout the day. 

“My sister-in-law lives 12 km away from me. Sometimes she gets storms; we’ll talk on the phone, and while she is dealing with that, I have sunshine and fair weather,” said a resident of Toulouse to public service broadcaster FranceInfo

“Departments are not uniform at all,” said another.

“Take [Haute-Garonne]: the southern part of the department is a long way off, and with the Pyrenees nearby, the weather there is completely different from what we experience here or in the northern part of the department.”

This does not mean that warnings will be reduced for the department, however.

“When a department's map displays multiple alert colours, the danger level assigned to the department as a whole remains the highest of the displayed colours,” said Météo France when announcing the change.

It is only when a person visits the Météo France website and clicks on their department that they will see exact warning levels in a more detailed map, otherwise general maps (on social media, etc) will see the entire department coloured. 

It will also allow forecasters to temporarily increase warnings to their maximum level for a specific area, without having to put an entire department on the highest, red, alert. 

“We can now state that in certain sectors of a department, Seine-Maritime for instance, wind speeds will exceed the red alert thresholds,” said Director of Institutional Relations at Météo France Benoît Thomé to FranceInfo

This means “the danger will be far greater than in areas remaining at the orange alert level,” but that red alerts do not have to be raised everywhere.

These advances will also allow the forecaster to work more closely with emergency services and local authorities, pinpointing exactly where help will be needed most both during and immediately after intense weather events.

More accurate heatwave alerts to come next summer 

Looking towards 2027, Météo France may roll out localised heatwave alerts, potentially allowing some areas of larger communes to be placed on different heatwave (canicule) alert levels. 

This will be particularly beneficial for coastal and mountain areas where inland temperatures can be significantly warmer than the coast, and to account for differences between urban and rural areas.

France is set to face a September heatwave this weekend, with several departments already facing yellow heatwave alerts.
