Water restrictions are growing across France as the country faces a historic June heatwave, with 59 departments now seeing alerts or partial bans on tap water usage.
Communes in the Pyrénées-Orientales, Cher, Indre, Loiret and Puy-de-Dôme department are all at ‘crise’ level and face the harshest restrictions on tap water usage.
A further nine departments are on the second-highest warning level (alerte-renforcée).
Restrictions include limits on watering gardens or cleaning vehicles, topping up swimming pools, and at crise level all but essential tap water usage.
The remaining departments see vigilance warnings, where residents should be careful over tap water usage due to low groundwater levels in the area.
As a reminder, restrictions are based on water from three sources - tap, surface water (lakes etc) and wells - as well as the reason for their use (at home/personal use, professional companies, farmers, or local authorities).
The VigiEau website is updated daily and covers all restriction types through an interactive map, as well as showing local restrictions in your area via your address.
