Former customers of a popular online French bank who did not transfer their funds before it closed down must now recoup the money from a public fund.

Ma French Bank, the online wing of La Poste’s banking service (La Banque Postale), announced in December 2024 that it would close after being in operation for just six years.

It was one of the first major online banks in France, and had more than 700,000 customers at its peak.

Account holders were informed of the impending closure last year through several emails and letters. They were instructed to transfer their funds to another bank – or open an account with a new one – before closing their Ma French Bank account.

A €50 bonus was available to those who switched to a physical account with La Banque Postale, the physical La Poste branch.

The bank began reducing the services it offered before it closed fully in July.

From July 10 onwards, money could no longer be transferred from a Ma French Bank account.

Money held by public fund investor

Former customers who did not transfer their funds can still access their money.

Balances were transferred to the Caisse des dépôts et consignations (CDC), a government-controlled public investment fund responsible for handling money from closed or inactive bank accounts.

Requests to recoup funds from a closed Ma French Bank account can be made through the CDC website here

If you have trouble finding your account through the CDC, you can fill out this form on La Banque Postale’s website to get help requesting the funds.

The CDC will hold the money for 30 years before it is released and used for public investments.

La Banque Postale has not stated how many accounts were not closed before July. However, Le Figaro reported that the majority of accounts that were not closed contain little money.

When ING France – a similar online bank – shut down in December 2022, more than 90% of accounts had been closed in time. Only around 3,000 customers needed to reclaim funds from the CDC.
